Expressing Your Feelings About Your Parents Divorce or Remarriage

Kids and grown-ups often have things they want to say to people they care about but don't know exactly how to say them. This can be particularly true if your parents are getting divorced or have gotten remarried. You may be worried about saying the wrong thing or that the person will take it the wrong way. It's also possible that you know what you feel and want to say, but the person you want to say it to lives far away or rarely comes to visit. For example, if your parents are divorced and you don't get to see one of your parents very much. In fact, in this case, you may be afraid to say what you feel because you're worried that this will result in your parent getting angry & that you'll end up seeing them even less. This rarely happens, but kids worry about it anyway.

All kids have lots of thoughts and feelings about their parents divorce or remarriage. Writing a letter or sending an e-mail to someone can often be a great way of expressing what you feel and/or communicating with someone you can't talk to in person. One of the especially good things about a letter is that it can give you a chance to get out hurt feelings or angry feelings. You can decide later whether or not to mail the letter or click send.

Another way of expressing your feelings about your parents divorce or remarriage is to keep a journal or diary. You can write in it every day or just when you feel like it. If writing isn't your thing, you can cut pictures from magazines and express how you feel or you can draw in your diary. Many people find that drawing is a very helpful way to express themselves. No one has to read or see what you've expressed; it's just for you. You can buy a diary or journal in a store or use a notebook or several pieces of paper stapled together. What it looks like isn't important, as long as it's your special place to express yourself.
