Why Parents Divorce
by Michele Diamond, LICSW

It's often very hard to understand why your parents have to get a divorce in the first place. Maybe they argued sometimes, maybe they argued all the time, or maybe they didn't even speak to each other very much anymore. Still, most kids say they would rather have both parents living together than apart. If kids had it their way, they might make it against the law to let their parents get divorced. Divorce though is a grown-up matter. Your parents make the decision to divorce and no matter what you do or what you wish, you cannot change their minds. Before parents make a decision to divorce, they think about it for a long time. They do not want to hurt you or make you feel sad, they love you very much. The thing is though, that they do not love each other any more or just can't seem to get along no matter how much or hard hard they try. They do not want you to be unhappy and they do not want you to grow up in an unhappy home. They want you to be happy and if they're happy, after awhile, you will be happy too.
REMEMBER: DIVORCE IS A GROWN-UP PROBLEM AND DECISION. YOU DIDN'T CAUSE IT AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE IT, BUT YOU CAN COPE WITH IT!
Write to me at michele@divorcestep.com and tell me how you have coped with your parents' divorce. If you'd like, I'll put it up on this website so that other kids will learn fro it.
